What’s in our beard oils? Carriers oils and ingredient breakdown

Beard Oils have always been a staple in any man’s beard care routine, it’s one of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep the hair and skin underneath hydrated and moisturised. Beard Oils can be simply broken down into 2 parts: carrier oils which will be the bulk component of any beard oil and you have the scented oils which could be either essential oils or fragrance oils. Today we’ll be looking at carrier oils, specifically the ones included in the Savage Alchemy Beard Oil range, and the reasons and benefits for using them.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are any oil usually derived from a vegetable or nut source that are the main component of Beard Oils. You’ve probably heard of some typically used ones such as Jojoba and Argan, both of which are used in our Beard care. One of the main reasons we use carrier oils is to be able to dilute potent and high strength essential and fragrance oils so that they’re suitable to be used on our skin and hair.

Since each individual carrier oil will have their own benefits, beard oils tend to use a specific blend to have as many benefits within a single bottle. You may find oils which use only 2-3 carrier oils while some may try to cram 6-8 within a blend, but there’s no right or wrong way and the variety of carrier oils doesn’t necessarily mean it’s of higher or better quality. It’s all about the finished product and how you find it treats your beard.

The Savage Alchemy Beard Oil range uses a blend of 4 carrier oils: Hemp seed oil, Jojoba oil, Argan oil and sweet Almond oils all of which are natural and organic. This blend of oils does it’s best to offer a wide range of care for your beard from retaining moisture to strengthening the hair.

Hemp Seed Oil

Cannabis Sativa (hemp seed) Oil may have a bit of a worrying name, but hemp seed oil is derived from non-psychoactive hemp seeds. Hemp seed are famous for being exceptionally rich in healthy essential fats such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 in the optimal ratio of 3:1. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are also known to aid with stimulating hair growth as well as improving circulation to the surface of the skin which is beneficial to keeping hair strong. Hemp Seed oil is known for its high protein content and since hair is 90% keratin, this carrier oil can help provide proteins necessary. Even better, hemp seed oil helps retains moisture to keep hair from going brittle. All in all, it’s our number one ingredient for helping our beards stay as healthy as possible.

Jojoba Oil

Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) seed oil is a well known beard oil ingredients. It’s an oil which is very close to sebum, the oil our skin produces on it’s own, which means jojoba oils gets absorbed and retained in the skin quickly and easily. Jojoba oil itself is also rich in important vitamins and minerals including Vitamin E and B-complex. It’s also an excellent moisturiser and skin treatment, keeping it supple and hydrated. Since it’s absorbed easily into the skin, Jojoba Oil is an ingredient mainly used for the skin and not necessarily your beard itself. But since beards act like a wick, taking the natural oils away from our skin, it’s just as important to care for a long with the quality of the hair.

Argan Oil

Arganisa Spinosa (Argan) kernel oil, derived from the Argan tree that’s featured in a wide range of cosmetic and grooming products. It’s known to have high concentrations of antioxidants, amino acids and vitamin E to help restore strength and elasticity for your beard. Argan oil loves to coat the hair and leaves a protective shielding, it aids in restoring a shininess to the hair which makes it look healthier and fuller. Like a lot of other carrier oils, Argan oil is also great for maintaining moisture and keeping it locked in. So if you find yourself having a dry beard, especially in winter, using a beard oil containing Argan will be the best thing you can do!

Sweet Almond Oil

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) oil is from cold pressing the kernels of the almond tree. It’s a very lightweight carrier oil which makes it a perfect ingredient to keep a beard oil from being too heavy or greasy once applied. Sweet almond oil is known to be an emollient, meaning it can fill in the gaps of your hair on a cellular level, making your beard feel smoother and thus softer. This kind of conditioning helps the hair be combed easily, aiding in how you style your beard especially when it comes to using a balm. It’s also a helpful moisturiser and helps strengthen hair, which is why it’s used in conjunction with the other 3 carrier oils used in the Savage Alchemy Beard Oil range.

When combined, a range of carrier oils can be incredibly beneficial to your hair and beard as well as the skin underneath. So while they’re used as a transport for scents and essential oils, they’re definitely not thought to be useless! Using beard oils containing quality carrier oils is essential to having the best beard you can have, all while allowing you to be smelling great!
